A 3D render of a dress on a static mannequin tells you what a garment looks like. A 3D animation of that same dress on a walking model tells you what a garment feels like.

How Garment Animation Works in CLO 3D
CLO 3D's animation system works by simulating physics on the garment mesh over a sequence of frames. The software calculates how each vertex of the fabric responds to gravity, inertia, and the underlying body motion at every point in the animation timeline.
The process breaks down into a few key steps:
1. Avatar Animation
CLO comes with built-in avatar animations — walking, turning, sitting, posing. You can also import custom motion capture data in formats like BVH or FBX. The avatar provides the underlying skeletal motion that drives the garment simulation.
2. Fabric Property Configuration
Every fabric in CLO has a set of mechanical properties — bending stiffness, stretch ratio, weight, friction, damping. These properties determine how the garment responds to the avatar's movement. A stiff brocade behaves very differently from a fluid jersey knit, and CLO models that difference accurately.
3. Simulation and Cache
Once the avatar motion and fabric properties are set, CLO simulates the garment frame by frame. The simulation calculates collision detection between fabric layers, gravity effects, and stretch distribution. The result is cached so it can be played back in real time.
4. Rendering
The final animation is rendered with CLO's built-in renderer or exported to external renderers like Blender Cycles, V-Ray, or Unreal Engine for cinematic-quality output.
